It’s a known fact that raising toddlers is as challenging as it gets. Kids, as they grow, pick up so much from the way we live, our society, the television, and the internet, that they start developing a personality from the very nascent stages. With this, comes a set of behavioral challenges children tend to show over time.
In light of this, we focus on some common challenges parents might face with toddlers and tips on managing them.
Learning to Say No
As children learn to talk, they tend to closely listen to the way you speak. This often means, they pick up words and understand the consequences of them.
The most common of them all, when kids learn to say no, they learn that it draws your attention and is a form of defiance. Hence, it is recommended that you respond carefully without shouting or getting evidently irritated.
Tip: Empathize with your child. By channeling that energy into understanding why your kid is reacting a certain way will create a space for your child to negotiate. Subsequently, children will stop reacting with constant NOs and learn to put forth their side better.
Learning to Scream
Children learn to scream when they show defiance. Be it at home, or out at a store, kids scream to either draw attention, throw a tantrum to get what they want when they are forced to do something or when they are overwhelmed by an emotion/situation. While this can get really annoying for parents, responding to them, in return, by screaming will do very little to ease the situation.
Tip: Communication is key. Judge the situation by talking to your child as equals and understanding their expectations/standards. Acknowledge how they are feeling and offer guidance on how to manage their feelings.
Learning to Avoid Eating
Yet another most common challenge parents face when it comes to toddlers is getting them to eat all kinds of food. Children learn to refuse food by either spitting it out, hiding the food somewhere in the house, or by feeding it to pets (if you have any). When kids don’t eat the right amount, they get hungry often and tend to get easily irritable; setting forth mood swings and more defiance.
Tip: To avoid any unhealthy food habits, be proactive with the way you feed your child right from when they can understand your words and reactions. Sometimes parents make fun of baby food in front of the kids, which makes them refuse the food. Additionally, avoid calling vegetables and fruits repeatedly healthy. Kids tend to believe food that is healthy always tastes bad and as a result, avoid eating it.
